Homeowners Insurance
Not all homeowners policies afford the same coverage and/or endorsements (optional coverage’s you can purchase). Be sure to address all your concerns before you make a final decision on your homeowners purchase. Some things you may want to consider:
- Do you want a repair or replacement cost policy?
- What endorsements are available and which do you need to consider?
- Do you want to endorse your jewelry, guns and collectibles to your homeowners or purchase a separate marine (all risk) policy for your property that has internal policy limits or special needs (like items of value you regularly remove from the home)?
- Most companies have certain maintenance requirements-is your home in good repair? If not let the agent know and discuss your options.
- A good general rule is if something has an engine and it cannot be reasonably assumed it is used to maintain your property it is not covered by your home insurance, even if it is covered there may be restrictions such as only covered when at your residence-if in doubt-ask!
- Vacant homes and homes that are rented need special endorsements or policies and are not covered by a standard homeowner policy. These policies are generally more expensive and do not have as broad of coverage since they are not in the care and control of the owner.
It is important to know homeowners insurance is meant to cover unexpected damage and not routine maintenance or neglect. Be sure to review what you’re covered for with the agent and review your policy when you receive it!
